Sleep and recovery

Sleep is the input that affects everything else, and it is the one most often treated as negotiable. Poor sleep worsens glycaemic control, appetite regulation, blood pressure and cognitive performance, and its effects are measurable long before anyone calls it a problem.

Programmes in this area

Sleep optimisation

For people who sleep enough hours but not well. The programme treats sleep as a set of controllable inputs rather than a nightly accident, working on timing regularity, light exposure, core body temperature, and the timing of caffeine and alcohol. Objective measurement through wearable data or formal sleep analysis establishes what is actually happening rather than relying on recall. Where disrupted breathing during sleep is suspected it is assessed rather than assumed, given its cardiovascular and metabolic consequences. Regularity is emphasised, since it predicts long-term outcomes more strongly than duration.

Insomnia treatment

Structured care for persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep. Assessment first distinguishes insomnia from other causes of poor sleep, including disrupted breathing, circadian misalignment, chronic pain, and thyroid or hormonal contributors, since the treatment differs entirely depending on which is driving it. First-line treatment is cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, which outperforms medication for long-term outcomes and carries no dependence risk. Sleep tracking is used carefully, because anxious over-monitoring of sleep scores can itself worsen sleep. Where medication is genuinely warranted it is used deliberately and reviewed, rather than continued indefinitely by default.

Recovery optimisation

For people training hard, travelling frequently or carrying sustained workload who are no longer bouncing back as they should. Assessment covers heart rate variability trends, sleep quality, inflammatory markers, iron and vitamin D status and body composition, to separate genuine under-recovery from under-fuelling or simple overtraining, which look similar from the outside but call for opposite responses. Management adjusts training load and its distribution, nutrition timing and protein adequacy, and sleep. Clinic recovery therapies are used where they support the process rather than substitute for it. Success is measured as capacity restored, not sessions completed.

Common questions

What causes poor sleep?

Frequently something other than sleep habits. Untreated obstructive sleep apnoea, nasal obstruction, hormonal change, stress physiology and the bedroom environment itself all contribute, and no amount of sleep hygiene addresses a structural cause.

How is sleep actually measured?

Through structured assessment, wearable data where available covering duration, regularity and heart rate variability, and onward referral for formal sleep study where the picture suggests it.

Does sleep regularity matter as much as duration?

Recent research suggests regularity may predict outcomes more strongly than duration alone, which is a useful finding because a consistent schedule is more achievable than an extra hour for most people.
